Class trip to Hastings, England

Class trip to Hastings, England

On the morning of 28th September the 9c and 9d set off for their class trip to Hastings, England. We were all very nervous and excited. On the bus we wanted to listen to a CD with our favourite songs but in the end we just listened to famous children’s songs like ‘Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows’ and ‘Speedy Gonzales’.
Before we were allowed to enter the ferry in Calais, officers checked our passports, which took a while. It was really windy on the ferry and we were afraid that some smaller classmates would be blown away. Some students took photos, some bought food or souvenirs and others just stayed on the upper deck to enjoy the sunshine. After about two hours we arrived at Dover Harbor. At first it was really confusing to drive on the left side of the road but we got used to it fast. When we arrived at our youth hostel ‘Astral Lodge’ we were tired but also impressed as most of the rooms had a beautiful sea view. We had dinner and then went to our rooms to unpack. It was a really strange night for all of us because we were in a different country with different food and different sockets.
The next morning some of us woke ‘early’ because of the time difference. Breakfast was at nine o’clock so a few of us went outside to the sea or went jogging with Mr. Brinkmann. After breakfast we did a guided tour around Hastings. Our guide told us why a part of Hastings is called ‘The America Ground’ and we learned a lot of things about fishermen and the history of Hastings. Then he showed us special buildings of the town like ‘The Piece of Cheese’ which is a tiny, three cornered-cottage. We also learned about the smugglers who used the narrow alleys to hide their goods. After the tour we had to do a quiz on Hastings. We asked English people to answer some questions, which was really fun and being able to talk to them made us proud. In the afternoon we went to the beach to play volleyball, basketball or just relax and enjoy the perfect weather. Although there were just stones and shells and no sand it was really fun. We spent the evening together in our rooms or on the stairwell, because Wi-Fi was best there.
On Wednesday we went to Dover Castle, where we visited old tunnels, which were used in war times. After that we walked along the white cliffs of Dover. We took many pictures as the view was spectacular. When our warm-hearted bus driver Waldemar drove us back to Hastings nearly half of us fell asleep, because of the long walk along the cliffs.
On Thursday we went to London. We took the underground to visit sights like the Tower of London. After a stroll along the Thames River we had lunch at Borough Market. We also saw Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. Most of us spent the rest of the day shopping in Oxford Street. Those who were not interested in shopping took the bus and underground to see “London in a nutshell” with Mr Brinkmann. Back in Hastings we had traditional fish & chips.
All in all it was a nice trip with our teachers Mrs Binder and Mr Wolter (9d), Ms Schmitz and Mr Brinkmann (9c).
