Erdkunde-Exkursion Canterbury 2019

We started our field trip, punctual as always, at about half past eight. The most important things like ID, phone, speakers and, of course, two watermelons in our carry-on luggage. After an eight-hour-drive with three little stops and some traffic, we got to Calais and boarded the ferry. Having arrived in Dover, we directly left again to drive to the University of Kent campus, where we would stay for the week. We explored the campus and our houses, each with six bedrooms, one kitchen and two bathrooms, and then the cooking began. How do we use the gas cooker? Which house has the biggest pot? Where is an open supermarket?

The next morning, after a good night’s rest, we had some breakfast and went for a nice long walk down the hill to Canterbury. There, we had a guided tour by some friendly seniors who knew a lot of fun facts about the city. After that we had some free time, in which we had to do the mapping (of a city block). This task mostly consisted of looking up and questioning whether there is another floor up there that is just hidden by the roof, what that floor might be used for and whether the house is in a good state or not. Home, after walking instead of taking the bus, our feet were so sore that we just hung around the houses, having some food and talking a bit with others.

Day three, we drove to a solar park and had a presentation about solar energy on the bus. On our arrival at the park, we realized there were no toilets. A staff member showed us around the lines of solar panels and explained how they work, how the energy gets collected, transformed from DC to AC and brought to the national grid. After that, we sat in the bus for a few more hours until we arrived in London. We then took the tube to the London Science Museum, where we had thirty minutes to explore an exhibition about the atmosphere and climate change. When the time was up, there were still some students and teachers missing, they got lost in the maze of the different exhibitions. After some long waiting, we took the tube again to get to Piccadilly Square, where we had free time for shopping and lunch. On our way back, we made a stop at the local Sainsbury’s. Back on campus, it was so warm that some people decided that a water battle would be a good idea.

On Thursday we went to Whitstable, there, on the cliffs, with view on the wind park, we had a presentation about the wind park and wind energy in general. Then, another group gave us a tour of Whitstable. We visited the Castle and its garden, the harbour, the community centre and a small alley called Squeeze Gut Alley, which is called that way because some boys used to annoy a fat police officer until he chased them, then ran into that alley where he could not follow them. Then we went to Margate, listened to another presentation about how tourism affected Margate and then had some time to hang around the beach, go shopping or get lunch. After getting on the bus, we went to our final destination for the day, Dover. We walked across fields and through forests to get to the White Cliffs of Dover and listened to our last presentation. Then, we walked along them towards the port and the visitor centre, where our bus was waiting. We then got to do some last minute shopping for the drive back on the next day.

The last day, we had to get up early to pack our things, clean the house and get breakfast. And so we left again for a long drive to and from the ferry to get home.
